Food is expensive in France. Plan on it! Budget for it, and then let the cost concerns go. Enjoy!
In France there are so many, many, many delicious things to eat!
Many restaurants are closed on Mondays.
You are likely to need a reservation for weekend dinners.
Most days in Chartres we make it to either Le Parvis, La Picoterie and/or Le Serpente.
They're reasonably priced with delicious food--and oh so near to the cathedral.

Not To Be Missed
La Picoterie 02 37 36 14 54 (Crèpes)

36, rue des Changes 28000 Chartres
Open every day. No smoking
A wonderful place to enjoy a crèpe or gallette. (Our favorites crèpes are the popeye and the verte.) The servers are very friendly (many enjoy speaking English) and the food is really tasty. Reasonably priced. Very near to the cathedral. You will need a reservation on weekend nights.

Au Bon Croissant
1, rue de Bois Merrain 28000 Chartres
Telephone: 02 37 21 36 26
I love stopping by in the morning before the cathedral opens for
a pain au chocolat (croissant with chocolate in the center) and café
au lait. They have a great lunch menu that includes salads, omlettes, and wonderful pastries! Nice room upstairs for visiting or writing in the afternoons. In 2006 we discovered that our wireless internet worked here--a bonus!

|
Bistrot de la Cathédrale 02 37 36 59 60
Place de la Cathedral (on the south side of the cathedral close to the west wall)
This restaurant serves hearty Chartrain cooking. Midrange price-wise. The deserts are fabulous!
|
Café Des Arts
45-47 rue des Changes 28000 Chartres
A nice place to sit outside in the late Spring, Summer or early Fall. The food is reasonably priced. They have a wonderful selection of desserts that are not too big and not too expensive. (I don't recommend their bathrooms. The women's toilet does not have a seat.)

A wonderful place for a nice, relaxing, expensive dinner. They have a variety of menus from around 30 euros to 55 euros.Tasty food, good service. They also have wonderful wine selections. Table number 3, a small round table that seats two people, is our favorite; it's right beside a window. If it is already reserved and you are just two, ask for one of the tables that are next to the wall. They will give you a bit more privacy. Reservations are a must, especially on the weekends. Closed Sunday and Monday nights.

Hearty french meals. Just a short walk

Monsieur Jouffrieau dresses up on Sundays as Henri IV to promote their daily special, Le Pol au Pot (chicken with vegetables and broth--delicious!). There are tables outside for tea (wifi available).
Rooms for rent are available above the restaurant. Owned by Marie-Sylvie and Xavier Jouffrieau.
