After Robert Ferré finished laying out the labyrinth, it was our turn to go to work!

Jill and Robert Ferré

First things first. We had to raise this tree branch.

Then we had to make a final decision about materials.
We tested out the possibility of red bricks.
We liked the feel of it, so we ordered the bricks to match our brickwalkway and wall.

How to dig out the walls?
I thought an edger might be useful; it wasn't!
I don't recommend it.

We invited the Friends of the Deep Haven Labyrinth to come help out.
We asked them the bring their workgloves, spades, buckets and prayers.

It was a great workday, but progress was slower than we had hoped.

Digging the walls

Since it can rain a lot in May in Minnesota we were concerned about the paint disappearing.
Our sister in law came up with the brilliant idea of using an icechopper to dig out the brick trenches.
We put the ice chopper on one side of the line and with our foot, dug it into the ground.
Then we did the same thing on the other side of the line.
After a little while we could pull out "sod snakes."
It worked beautifully! And quickly!

Then we had to place the bricks into the trenches.
We are proud to say that each brick was prayed into place.

Putting bricks into labyrinth

As we were laying the last brick in on Mother's Day, May 9, 1999,
three generations of a family arrived to walk the labyrinth together.

The installation was finished
and blessed both by us and the trees in the yard.
