The Labyrinths at DeepHaven

Many people wonder why we would invite the public to come walk the labyrinths in our yard. Sharing these spiritual tools that have led us to so much clarity, inspiration, love, gratitude, and faith is our privilege and joy.

People come—by themselves or with others—and pray the DeepHaven labyrinths every day year-round. Neighbors walk or ride their bikes over, while out of town visitors from as far away as Europe, South America and Asia stop by en route to other destinations. There are ten labyrinths in our yard.

1. DeepHaven Labyrinth. (1999) Bricks and grass. Chartres-Style, 51 feet.

Location: The front yard. Path starts between the angels. Enter by stepping stones.

Purpose: Spiritual awakening and reawakening.

Description: Installed in 1999, the DeepHaven Labyrinth is a 51 foot diameter replica of the labyrinth pattern laid in the floor of Chartres Cathedral (outside Paris, France) around 1201 AD. The pattern is a mathematical statement of the deep love of Christ. This labyrinth and surrounding gardens have been dedicated to spiritual awakening and reawakening. The path begins between the angels in the front yard.

2. Neighborhood Blessing Labyrinth. (2004) Grass and annual flower beds.

Location: On the Northome Boulevard parkway in the grass.

Purpose: Spiritual outreach and blessing, Sharing of God’s beauty, peace and joy.
Description: The Neighborhood Blessing Labyrinth can be seen from the street. It was designed and installed in 2004 by members of the Tuesday morning contemplative prayer group that meets here during the school year. Walkers, bikers, joggers, and those driving by all enjoy it!

3. Welcome Labyrinth. (2004) Mulch and rope surrounded by flowers and rocks.

Location: West side of the driveway. Pines and poplars surround it.

Purpose: Encouragement to follow one’s path.
Description: The Welcome Labyrinth (2004) is a replica of an ancient labyrinth petroglyph. It is easily spotted on the west side of the driveway near the pine and poplar trees. Inspired by the mythical legend of Ariadne’s thread, the path is the rope (not the space between the ropes). To reach the center one must walk on the rope or straddle it. Many have noticed that this labyrinth seems to exude a sense of joy and playfulness.

4. Secret Garden Labyrinth. (2001) Stones, shells and personal treasures on mulch.

Location: Nestled behind many plants in the central corner of the front of the house.

Purpose: Resting in God.
Description: Moving through the gardens, one may discover the Secret Garden Labyrinth (2001). Composed of stones, shells and other treasures that Jill has collected or been given over the years, it is used for visual prayer and meditation. It is a place to rest in God.

5. Friends and Family Labyrinth. (2001) Bricks and grass.

Location: By the lake in the western corner of the grass. (Look for the stone bench.)

Purpose: Space dedicated to petitionary prayer.
Description: Near the water, in the west corner of the yard is a bench that faces the entrance to the Friends and Family Labyrinth, a small 3 circuit/4 wall brick pattern in the grass. It is used to pray for the daily needs of our family and friends. Approximately 200 bricks, approximately 18 feet by 18 feet.

6. Wellness Prayer Labyrinth. (2002) MN rocks on mulch with rose quartz center stone

Location: Northwestern corner of the yard by the lake (beyond the pine tree).

Purpose: Increased health and wholeness.
Description: On the far west side of the picnic area is the Wellness Prayer Labyrinth. This Scandinavian style labyrinth—rocks on earth placed near the water—was designed to support those praying for physical, emotional, spiritual and mental health. Due to the narrowness of the paths, it must be walked slowly.

7. Labyrinth of Life-Dancing Lady Labyrinth. (2003) Lake Michigan rocks on mulch.

Location: At the end of the driveway, between the driveway and the lake.

Purpose: Support during times of crisis. See www.pathsofpeace.com.
Description:Those facing great challenges seem attracted to the Dancing Lady Labyrinth© pattern. The Labyrinth of Life, an exuberant lady with two entrances/exits under her arms, is dedicated to our friends who are struggling. It is built with stones collected from the Lake Michigan shoreline. This labyrinth is a favorite of many regular retreatants.

8. Companion Labyrinth (2004) Mexican river rocks on mulch.

Location: On the eastern side of the yard between the house and lake.

Purpose: Exploration of relationships.
Description: Based on a double spiral, the Companion Labyrinth (aka the Reconciliation Labyrinth) was designed for two people to walk together. Entering on separate paths, walkers meet in the middle where they move onto the “other’s” path on their way out. It can also be walked with a "companion" who is not physically present.

9. Dragon Fly Emergence Labyrinth. (2005) Stones from Lake Minnetonka and grass.

Location: On the hillside above the lake (the best view is from the dock).

Purpose: Spiritual emergence.
Description: The Dragon Fly Labyrinth is meant to nurture spiritual emergence. All the rocks were taken from the water (just as a dragonfly nymph comes out of the water to become a flying adult). The stone benches (also brought up from the lake) above and below it are great spots for contemplation and prayer.

10 Sand Box Labyrinth. (Annual) Different pattern each year. Glass beads in sand.

Purpose: Located near the hammock. To showcase different labyrinth patterns. During 2007 we have the classical seven circuit labyrinth pattern on display.
