Labyrinth of Life: The Construction Story

It began with a rock collecting expedition at Lake Michigan.
Once the rocks were unloaded next to the pile of mulch at the end of the driveway
and mingled with the prayers for several who were in life-threatening situations,
they seemed to ask to be a labyrinth.

I measured out a 28 foot circle on the lawn.

Then I started removing the grass.

Tools used for the project:

wheel with round stick placed though it's center (anchor for measuring chain)

28 foot chain attached to a round key holder (used to lay out the original circle)

wheelbarraw

shovel

gardening gloves

measuring tape (bought at Home Depot)

plastic tape (for marking the circle and later the paths)

newspaper (to put over the dirt to decrease weeds coming up later)

mulch

rocks

surveyors' flags (for making the path)

camera and film (to document the creation process)

As I dug out the grass, I would put down newspaper and cover it with mulch.

After 3 days of hard work the circle was ready.

As I cleared the space I prayed for wisdom about the most appropriate labyrinth pattern.

The Dancing Woman Labyrinth © seemed right.

I called Lisa Moriarty, it's creator, for permission.
She not only graciously shared the pattern, but offered to help me install it.

First she had me lay down and she staked out the outline of the women's body.

It doesn't look like much, but just wait!!!

We had determined the width of the five paths before beginning,

so now we measured them out.

Then we layed out the paths from top to bottom and side to side.

We placed a stone next to each flag as a marker.

Then we used plastic tape to outline the "walls" of the paths
and the form of the dancing lady.

Next we placed the largest rocks on top of the tape,

medium size rocks inside the body of the woman,

and the smallest rocks in the contours of her hair.

A bench was added to the center.

Hostas were added around the perimeter of the circle.

Stepping stones were placed before the two thresholds of the Baltic wheel pattern.

The labyrinth has welcomed many visitors already.
